چکیده

The space charge of unbunched, high intensity beams can be compensated by the trapping of charged particles in the potential well of the beam. The source of these secondary charge particles can be the residual gas in the beam line. The effect is important in the Low energy beam transport (LEBT) regions. At CERN’s Linac4, the LEBT transports a pulsed 45keV Hbeam, which is compensated by the positive ions, created by collision of the beam with the neutral gas in the beam pipe. The rise time and amount of compensation may be varied by the density of neutral gas and the type of gas used (through the cross-section for ion production and the mass of the resulting ion). In this paper we present measurement results for the transport of the beam at the Linac4 LEBT with the addition of hydrogen, nitrogen and krypton gases into the line, and compare them with simulations of the beam dynamics including the effect of compensating positive ions. The Hbeam is provided by a cesiated 2MHz RF ion source with an external solenoidal antenna, operating with 600 us pulses at 0.8Hz repetition rate.

Investigation of Space Charge Compensation at Fets

In order to contribute to the development of high power proton accelerators in the MW range, to prepare the way for an ISIS upgrade and to contribute to the UK design effort on neutrino factories, a front end test stand (FETS) is being constructed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UK [1]. The aim of the FETS is to demonstrate the production of a 60 mA, 2 ms, 50 pps chopped beam...

Study of Space Charge Compensated Lebt for Ess

To fulfil the requirements of ESS on beam transmission and emittance growth a detailed knowledge of the physics of beam formation as well as the interaction of the H with the residual gas is substantial. Space charge compensated beam transport using solenoids for ion optics is in favour for the Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) between ion source and the first RFQ. Space charge compensation redu...

تطبیق پذیری باریکه -H در قسمت انرژی پایین و متوسط ماشین Linac4 در سرن

Linac4 is the near future 160 MeV H- linear accelerator of the CERN presently under construction. It will replace the present Linac2 as injector of the proton accelerator complex in CERN. The Linac4 is composed of a 45 keV ion source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 352.2 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), which accelerates the beam to 3 MeV, and a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), ...

Time-resolved Investigation of the Compensation Processs of Pulsed Ion Beams

A LEBT system consisting of an ion source, two solenoids, and a diagnostic section has been set up to investigate the space charge compensation process due to residual gas ionization [1] and to study experimentally the rise of compensation. To gain the radial beam potential distribution time resolved measurements of the residual gas ion energy distribution were carried out using a Hughes Rojans...

The Ess Low Energy Beam Transport Line Design

The linear accelerator of the European Spallation Source (ESS) will deliver proton beams of 50 mA and 2.5 GeV onto the 5 MW neutron production target. The Proton Source for ESS (PS-ESS) [1] is based on the experience of TRIPS and VIS developed at LNS Catania [2,3]. A two solenoid Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) is foreseen to match the beam into the first acceleration stage, the Radio-Frequenc...
